Local leadership is a huge part of what makes the mission of RTOERO (soon to be Entente Education Canada) real and impactful. It’s at the district level where so much of our value plays out, serving our members and strengthening communities across the country.
The Exemplary District Awards, now in their second year, are based on the districts’ alignment with RTOERO’s three strategic goals (be the trusted voice of the broader education community, improve the lives of members and seniors, broaden the membership base) and seven values (accountability, community connection, giving back/making a difference, inclusion, leadership/vision, service to members, well-being).
We’re pleased to congratulate this year’s winners, who will be honoured at the Fall Forum in Toronto, Oct. 20–22:
- District 26 Kenora (small district, 749 or fewer members). For District 26, retirement is about wellness and connection. From vibrant newsletters to healthy lifestyle challenges, the district encourages active living. “The emphasis is always about choosing joy,” says First Vice-President Mary Cunningham.
- District 42 Mainland British Columbia (medium district, 750–1,999 members).
Stretching across 913,000 square kilometres, District 42 faces a unique challenge in connecting members. It succeeds through diverse live and online programming, and strong communication tools. Noting the district’s initiatives to foster belonging and outreach, First Vice-President Wendy Carr says “We work hard to invite engagement.”
- District 28 Region of Durham (large district, 2,000-plus members). As it approaches its 50th anniversary, District 28 demonstrates the ideal of “Together on the Journey”, its slogan. The district emphasizes inclusivity, lively and full programming, leadership development and community involvement. “We’re excited for what the future holds,” says council Alternate Aileen Fletcher.
The three winners were selected by an awards committee comprising representatives of last year’s winning districts. We applaud each of these winners for raising the bar, and inspiring all districts with their dedication and community spirit in action.
