More than half of 2025 respondents say they plan to continue working in retirement, and navigating a career transition ranks high on the list of professional development topics of interest.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cAs people live longer and population trends shift, many older workers are choosing\u2014or needing\u2014to stay in the workforce beyond the traditional retirement age,\u201d says John Cappelletti, chair of RTOERO. \u201cFor education organizations facing staffing challenges, this presents an opportunity. Recognizing the value of experienced workers, considering their needs, and fostering multigenerational workplaces can strengthen the sector.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image highlight-img\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ententefoundation.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/future-retirees-results-2025.png\" alt=\"An infographic summarizing the results that are outlined in the blog post.\" class=\"wp-image-24570\" style=\"width:375px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Highlights<\/h2>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Over half of the respondents plan to work part- or full-time in retirement, consistent with our previous surveys&rsquo; results.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A third of respondents are considering or have decided to retire sooner than planned. The top two factors influencing the decision are working conditions and health\/mental health.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A quarter of respondents are considering or have decided to delay their retirement. The top factor influencing the decision is economy\/inflation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Almost a quarter of respondents report having experienced ageism in the workplace.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who responded<\/h2>\n\n<p>The survey was sent to education sector workers across Canada who subscribe to RTOERO\u2019s email list. Of the 1084 respondents, 49% are classroom teachers, and 23% are school or school board administrators. Most live in Ontario.<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Classroom teacher \u2013 49%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Administrator in a school or school board \u201323%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>School or school board staff (e.g. business, admin, support staff) \u2013 11%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Post-secondary faculty and staff \u2013 8%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Other respondents were from early years, public service and non-profit associations.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Time to retirement<\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Retiring within the next 12 months \u2013 30%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1 to 5 years \u2013 52%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>6 to 10 years \u2013 11%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Working in retirement<\/h2>\n\n<p>More than half of survey respondents indicated their intention to stay engaged in work during retirement. This decision offers several advantages, such as maintaining social connections, using and developing skills, and enhancing financial stability.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cMany RTOERO members are working in some way after retiring from their career in education,\u201d says Jim Grieve, CEO of RTOERO. \u201cSome have stayed in education, but others venture into new areas. This can be a win-win-win\u2014for individuals, workplaces and society overall. But we don\u2019t want to see people feeling like they have to work, especially in jobs that impact well-being and shave years off of lifespan, because they can\u2019t survive without the income. That\u2019s why income security for older adults is among our advocacy issues.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Plans to work in retirement<\/h3>\n\n<p>We asked respondents to what extent they agreed or disagreed with the statement, \u201cI plan to continue to work full-time or part-time in retirement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Strongly agree \u2013 17%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Agree \u2013 35%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Neutral \u2013 20%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Disagree \u2013 9%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Strongly disagree \u2013 12%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I don\u2019t know\/haven\u2019t thought about it \u2013 7%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI&rsquo;m not ruling anything out yet, but full-time work is not appealing at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI&rsquo;d like to work part-time, especially as a transition from full-time for 50 years to full-time retirement. I think it would make it easier to adjust if I go from full-time to part-time to retirement.\u201c<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI plan to continue contributing, would be a better way to put it, or perhaps working on my own terms with a reduced load.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Working conditions, health and economy among factors affecting retirement timing<\/h2>\n\n<p>Even though work is on the horizon for many future retirees, it\u2019s not necessarily in their current roles. We ask respondents about which factors are influencing their timing of retirement.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Factors influencing timing of retirement<\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Working conditions \u2013 48%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Health\/mental health \u2013 42%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Economy\/inflation \u2013 33%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Caregiving for loved ones \u2013 18%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>None of the above \u2013 17%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Changes to retirement timeline<\/h3>\n\n<p>About one-third of respondents are considering or have decided to retire sooner than planned; the top two factors for retiring sooner were working conditions and health\/mental health.<\/p>\n\n<p>Just over a quarter of respondents are considering or have decided to delay their retirement. The top reason for delaying retirement was economy\/inflation.<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Considering retiring sooner \u2013 20%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Decided to retire sooner \u2013 14%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Considering delaying \u2013 14%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Decided to delay \u2013 11%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No change \u2013 34%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Retirement by design<\/h2>\n\n<p>Retirement offers an opportunity to explore <a href=\"https:\/\/ententefoundation.ca\/wondering-what-to-do-in-retirement-here-are-50-ideas\/\">new activities and experiences.<\/a> When asked to share one word or phrase that comes to mind when they think of retirement, respondents overwhelmingly associated it with \u201cfreedom\u201d.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Flight risks and architects<\/h3>\n\n<p>When it comes to preparing for retirement, some prefer careful planning and certainty, while others lean towards spontaneity and impulsivity. We asked which approach resonates most with our respondents.<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Architect \u2013 I\u2019ll go when I\u2019m ready! &#8211; 35%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Flight risk \u2013 I\u2019m outta here as soon as I can manage it! \u2013 31%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contributor \u2013 I\u2019m enjoying my career too much to consider retirement yet! 7%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Procrastinator \u2013 I\u2019m putting off thinking about it! \u2013 7%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pessimist \u2013 I can\u2019t leave! 3%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI&rsquo;m afraid I&rsquo;ll be bored. I need to start making plans!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI am looking forward to embarking on a new adventure to develop aspects of myself and have new experiences that I have had to put on hold while working.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI love my job but dislike the politics of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Retirement readiness<\/h2>\n\n<p>Financial planning is typically what comes to mind when people think about retirement planning. And while it\u2019s just one part of retirement planning, there\u2019s no denying its importance. However, it&rsquo;s also crucial to recognize the significance of <a href=\"https:\/\/ententefoundation.ca\/how-to-prepare-for-retirement-emotionally\/\">emotional preparation for retirement<\/a>, as adjusting to this new phase of life can be just as impactful as financial readiness.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How financially prepared do you feel?<\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I\u2019m ready \u2013 18%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Almost prepared \u2013 27%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I\u2019ve done some things to prepare \u2013 33%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I\u2019m just starting to think about it \u2013 14%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Not at all prepared \u2013 8%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Top sources of financial advice<\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Financial planner\/advisor &#8211; 60%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Friends or colleagues \u2013 41%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Credit union\/bank \u2013 22%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Google searches \u2013 16%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Accountant \u2013 15%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Emotional preparedness for retirement<\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I\u2019m ready &#8211; 36%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Almost prepared &#8211; 20%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I\u2019ve done some things to prepare &#8211; 20% <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I\u2019m just starting to think about it  &#8211; 18% <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Not at all prepared &#8211; 5%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ageism exists in the education sector<\/h2>\n\n<p>Almost a quarter of respondents reported experiencing ageism in the workplace. <a href=\"https:\/\/ententefoundation.ca\/what-is-ageism\/\">Ageism<\/a> refers to stereotypes (thoughts), prejudice (feelings), or discrimination (actions) based on a person\u2019s age. Ageism in the workplace can include institutional ageism, which refers to policies, practices, social norms, and other systemic structures that restrict opportunities or disadvantage people based on age. It can also include interpersonal ageism, which happens in relationships between groups of two or more people, such as a staff.<\/p>\n\n<p>According to Amanda Bull, a former RTOERO Summer Scholar, who is studying workplace ageism, ageism in the workplace can be tricky to navigate. \u201cAgeism in the workplace, and ageism in general, is often implicit,\u201d Bull explains in a <a href=\"https:\/\/erenaissance.rtoero.ca\/so-you-dont-want-to-retire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent article in Renaissance magazine<\/a>. \u201cSo when you ask someone, \u2018Did you approach a manager about it or tell someone about it?\u2019 people often respond with, \u2018Well, no, because it\u2019s hard to prove\u2019 or \u2018I felt it, but I couldn\u2019t really demonstrate it with hard facts and evidence.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>We asked respondents to what extent they agreed or disagreed with the statement, \u201cI have experienced ageism in the workplace.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Strongly agree \u2013 7%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Agree \u2013 17%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Neutral \u2013 18%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Disagree \u2013 25%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Strongly disagree \u2013 29%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s an unspoken culture for advancement that means you hit the ceiling at some point as you get older. You\u2019re still valued but there\u2019s no encouragement to look to positions of higher responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI was by far the most qualified for a role at the board office, and everyone thought I would get it since I had done it temporarily, but I didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cNew practices have made me feel this way however I fundamentally disagree with these ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Love of learning<\/h2>\n\n<p>Workers nearing retirement continue to be interested in learning opportunities.
