Still, they are not ready to stop working, according to RTOERO\u2019s <em>2024 Future Retirees Survey<\/em> findings<em>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThe notion of retirement is changing. With aging populations and increasing life expectancy, older workers are continuing to work past the traditional retirement age\u2014either by necessity or choice,\u201d explains Martha Foster, chair of RTOERO, \u201cThis is an opportunity for education organizations, especially in a time of staffing challenges. See older workers as an asset. Consider their unique needs and perspectives. And design workplaces to be supportive and multigenerational.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>RTOERO has surveyed future retirees from the education sector for the past three years. The 2024 survey includes findings from 1,300 education sector workers, the majority within five years of retirement. The survey results offer a glimpse into people&rsquo;s perceptions of their preparedness for retirement, the types of information they seek, and the various factors impacting their retirement plans.<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Highlights<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Over half of the respondents plan to work part- or full-time in retirement, which is consistent with the results from our 2023 survey.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A third of respondents are considering or have decided to retire sooner than planned. The top two factors influencing the decision are working conditions and health\/mental health.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Just over a quarter of respondents are considering or have decided to delay their retirement. The top factor influencing the decision is economy\/inflation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>About one in five respondents have experienced ageism in the workplace.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When it comes to seeking financial advice, financial planners are the top source.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\"><div class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ententefoundation.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/future_retirees_survey_results_2024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22228\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<a class=\"btn btn-primary mt-4 mb-4\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ententefoundation.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/future_retirees_survey_results_2024.pdf\" role=\"button\" rel=\"noopener\">Download<\/a>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who responded<\/h2>\n\n<p>The survey was sent to education sector workers across Canada who subscribe to RTOERO\u2019s email list. Of the 1334 respondents, 49% are classroom teachers, and 29% are school or school board administrators. Most are within five years of retirement, and the majority live in Ontario.<\/p>\n\n<p>Classroom teacher \u2013 49%<br\/>Administrator in a school or school board \u2013 29%<br\/>School or school board staff (e.g. business, admin, support staff) \u2013 9%<br\/>Post-secondary faculty and staff \u2013 4%<\/p>\n\n<p>Other respondents were from early years, public service and non-profit associations.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Time to retirement<\/h3>\n\n<p>Retiring within the next 12 months \u2013 34%<br\/>1 to 5 years \u2013 55%<br\/>6 to 10 years \u2013 9%<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Working in retirement<\/h2>\n\n<p>More than half of survey respondents indicated their intention to stay engaged in work during retirement. This decision offers several advantages, such as maintaining social connections, using and developing skills, and enhancing financial stability.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cOne of the trends we\u2019re watching with the future of aging is the changing workforce,\u201d says Jim Grieve, CEO of RTOERO. Over the next decade, we\u2019ll see a shift in how many organizations approach the aging workforce. Those that embrace this reality as an opportunity will provide flexible options for older workers, creating a win-win situation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Plans to work in retirement<\/h3>\n\n<p>We asked respondents to what extent they agreed or disagreed with the statement, \u201cI plan to continue to work full-time or part-time in retirement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>Strongly agree \u2013 18%<br\/>Agree \u2013 37%<br\/>Neutral \u2013 19%<br\/>Disagree \u2013 10%<br\/>Strongly disagree \u2013 11%<br\/>I don\u2019t know\/haven\u2019t thought about it \u2013 5%<\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI would very much like to not have to work. But I want to make sure that I\u2019m not struggling in retirement financially.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI would like to explore something new, and with flexibility to allow me to also travel and take care of myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI would like to work less and be less responsible. The responsibility of being a principal weighs me down.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Working conditions, health and economy among factors affecting retirement timing<\/h2>\n\n<p>Even though work is on the horizon for many future retirees, it\u2019s not necessarily in their current roles. We ask respondents about which factors are influencing their timing of retirement.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Factors influencing timing of retirement<\/h3>\n\n<p>Working conditions \u2013 48%<br\/>Health\/mental health \u2013 40%<br\/>Economy\/inflation \u2013 34%<br\/>Caregiving for loved ones \u2013 17%<br\/>None of the above \u2013 17%<br\/>COVID-19 pandemic \u2013 5%<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Changes to retirement timeline<\/h3>\n\n<p>About one-third of respondents are considering or have decided to retire sooner than planned; the top two factors for retiring sooner were working conditions (72%) and health\/mental health (52%).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>Just over a quarter of respondents are considering or have decided to delay their retirement. The top reason for delaying retirement was economy\/inflation (68%).<\/p>\n\n<p>Considering retiring sooner &#8211; 21%<br\/>Decided to retire sooner &#8211; 13%<br\/>Considering delaying &#8211; 15%<br\/>Decided to delay &#8211; 13%<br\/>No change &#8211; 32%<\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI consistently delay retiring; work is too much fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI delayed my retirement plans by three years &#8211; however &#8211; if my working conditions had flexibility with time away, I would retire later.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI am eligible to retire but I want to better understand my options of continuing to work, whether in education or outside.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Retirement by design<\/h2>\n\n<p>Retirement offers an opportunity to explore <a href=\"https:\/\/ententefoundation.ca\/wondering-what-to-do-in-retirement-here-are-50-ideas\/\">new activities and experiences<\/a>. When asked to share one word or phrase that comes to mind when they think of retirement, respondents overwhelmingly associated it with \u201cfreedom\u201d.<\/p>\n\n<p>Notes Foster, \u00ab\u00a0Individuals nearing retirement hold predominantly optimistic perspectives regarding their future. This aligns with our understanding of retirees, as their happiness tends to increase throughout their retirement.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Flight risks and architects<\/h3>\n\n<p>When it comes to preparing for retirement, some prefer careful planning and certainty, while others lean towards spontaneity and impulsivity. We asked which approach resonates most with our respondents.<\/p>\n\n<p>Architect \u2013 I\u2019ll go when I\u2019m ready! &#8211; 33%<br\/>Flight risk \u2013 I\u2019m outta here as soon as I can manage it! \u2013 33%<br\/>Contributor \u2013 I\u2019m enjoying my career too much to consider retirement yet! 9%<br\/>Procrastinator \u2013 I\u2019m putting off thinking about it! \u2013 8%<br\/>Pessimist \u2013 I can\u2019t leave! 2%<br\/><\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI enjoyed my job but want more time for me instead of my students coming first.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI was a procrastinator until this year, now I\u2019m a flight risk.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI enjoy what I do, so should I retire? If I collect a pension, how much will I need to make in my other career to live comfortably?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Retirement readiness<\/h2>\n\n<p>Financial planning is typically what comes to mind when people think about retirement planning. And while it\u2019s just one part of retirement planning, there\u2019s no denying its importance. However, it&rsquo;s also crucial to recognize the significance of <a href=\"https:\/\/ententefoundation.ca\/how-to-prepare-for-retirement-emotionally\/\">emotional preparation for retirement<\/a>, as adjusting to this new phase of life can be just as impactful as financial readiness.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How financially prepared do you feel?<\/h3>\n\n<p>I\u2019m ready \u2013 17%<br\/>Almost prepared \u2013 28%<br\/>I\u2019ve done some things to prepare \u2013 32%<br\/>I\u2019m just starting to think about it \u2013 14%<br\/>Not at all prepared \u2013 8%<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Top sources of financial advice<\/h3>\n\n<p>Financial planner\/advisor &#8211; 60%<br\/>Friends or colleagues \u2013 39%<br\/>Credit union\/bank \u2013 23%<br\/>Accountant \u2013 15%<br\/>Google searches \u2013 12%\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Emotional preparedness for retirement<\/h3>\n\n<p>I\u2019m ready 32%<br\/>Almost prepared 24%<br\/>I\u2019ve done some things to prepare 21%<br\/>I\u2019m just starting to think about it 17%<br\/>Not at all prepared 5%<\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThis is a tough question for me because I am not sure if you ever really know how prepared you are until you actually retire!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ageism exists in the education sector<\/h3>\n\n<p>One-fifth of respondents indicated they have experienced <a href=\"https:\/\/ententefoundation.ca\/what-is-ageism\/\">ageism<\/a> in the workplace. Ageism is stereotypes (thoughts), prejudice (feelings) or discrimination (actions) on the grounds of a person\u2019s age. Ageism in the workplace can include institutional ageism, which refers to policies, practices, social norms, and other systemic structures that restrict opportunities or disadvantage people based on age. It can also include interpersonal ageism, which happens in relationships between groups of two or more people, such as a staff.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>We asked respondents to what extent they agreed or disagreed with the statement, \u201cI have experienced ageism in the workplace.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>Strongly agree \u2013 6%<br\/>Agree \u2013 14%<br\/>Neutral \u2013 17%<br\/>Disagree \u2013 28%<br\/>Strongly disagree \u2013 30%<\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI was a learning resource teacher for 10 years when a new administrator arrived. My job was changed to primary PE, and part of the rationale given was, \u2018You haven\u2019t got that long to go.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cAgeism is a form of judgement that has no place in any career. The longer someone spends in any field, the more experienced, efficient and valuable they become.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cSome assume I\u2019m no longer interested in professional development and learning. Also, some people think that because it\u2019s my last year, I don\u2019t care anymore and should be counting down the days.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Love of learning<\/h2>\n\n<p>Workers nearing retirement continue to be interested in learning opportunities.
