Keep your well-being a priority, and let\u2019s plan to end your career positively.<\/p>\n\n<p>Tasks:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Set up a folder on your computer to save your retirement planning materials.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Download the <a href=\"https:\/\/rtoero.ca\/retirement-bundle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ultimate retirement planning bundle<\/a> and save the files in your folder, so they\u2019re there when you need them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you haven\u2019t already, mark your retirement date on your calendar.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sign up to attend our free <a href=\"https:\/\/rtoero.ca\/events\/\">Retirement Planning Workshop<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you&rsquo;re not already a member, get your RTOERO membership now. Take a moment to daydream about this time next year when you\u2019re retired. Might you enjoy some more daytime walks? A late morning coffee?<\/p>\n\n<p>Tasks:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Learn about how to <a href=\"https:\/\/ententefoundation.ca\/retirement-income-sustaining-your-finances-in-retirement\/\">sustain your finances in retirement<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you have a<a href=\"https:\/\/ententefoundation.ca\/how-to-choose-a-financial-planner\/\"> financial planner<\/a>, set a meeting to talk through anything you need to do this year as you prepare, including when you want to <a href=\"https:\/\/ententefoundation.ca\/how-to-decide-when-to-start-your-cpp\/\">start your CPP<\/a>, how you can pay down any remaining debt and add to your emergency fund over the next year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contact your HR department to ask for a retirement planning information package and any forms you may need. These may also be easily available on your staff website.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"3-7-months-before-retirement\">7 months before retirement<\/h3>\n\n<p>It\u2019s a great time to spend a few weekend hours working on your retirement plan.<\/p>\n\n<p>Tasks:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Identify your income sources and expenses and make a budget. Here are two government tools that can help:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.getsmarteraboutmoney.ca\/calculators\/retirement-budget-worksheet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">retirement budget worksheet<\/a> from the Ontario Securities Commission lets you calculate your pre and post-retirement budget<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/itools-ioutils.fcac-acfc.gc.ca\/BP-PB\/budget-planner-tool\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">budget planner<\/a> from the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada is a great tool to generate a budget based on your specific life stage and goals<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contact your pension provider to discuss your situation. Things to discuss may include the following:<ul><li>what happens if you marry\/separate while on pension<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>survivor benefits<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>the timeline and process for applying for your pension<\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>what happens if you work while retired<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Update your pension information \u2013 register for online tools and name your survivor. Use the online calculator to check potential retirement dates.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Add \u2018apply for pension\u2019 to the excel checklist you saved in your retirement planning folder. Add the date based on what your pension provider said.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Explore your <a href=\"https:\/\/ententefoundation.ca\/insurance-plans-for-retirement-consider-these-5-things\/\">retirement insurance options<\/a> and decide on your insurance. Our <a href=\"https:\/\/ententefoundation.ca\/what-to-compare-when-looking-at-insurance-options-for-retirement-printable-checklist\/\">comparison checklist<\/a> can help. You can look at our <a href=\"https:\/\/ententefoundation.ca\/insurance\/insurance-plans\/\">retirement insurance plans here.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"4-6-months-before-retirement\">6 months before retirement<\/h3>\n\n<p>Often, financial planning is what comes to mind when we think about preparing for retirement, but what new retirees have told us is it\u2019s just as important to take time to prepare emotionally.<\/p>\n\n<p>Tasks:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reflect on how you may feel emotionally as you retire. Retirement is a significant change. Learn more: <a href=\"https:\/\/ententefoundation.ca\/how-to-prepare-for-retirement-emotionally\/\">How to prepare emotionally for retirement.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"5-5-months-before-retirement\">5 months before retirement<\/h3>\n\n<p>Use this month to consider your retirement lifestyle.<\/p>\n\n<p>Tasks:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Think about activities you\u2019d like to try \u2013 our members often share retirement is an ideal time to try things you\u2019ve always wanted to do or to get back to activities you used to enjoy but haven\u2019t had time to do. Need help coming up with ideas? Here\u2019s a list of <a href=\"https:\/\/ententefoundation.ca\/wondering-what-to-do-in-retirement-here-are-50-ideas\/\">50 activities for retirement.<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Go to your retirement planning folder and review the <em>Your life by design<\/em> ebook. It can help you get clear on your goals for retirement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"6-4-months-before-retirement\">4 months before retirement<\/h3>\n\n<p>This month is all about making your retirement official!<\/p>\n\n<p>Tasks:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Notify your supervisor of your retirement plans.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Write and submit your letter of retirement. Use the template you saved in your retirement planning folder in September. Or, get some tips and <a href=\"https:\/\/ententefoundation.ca\/what-to-include-in-your-retirement-letter-plus-a-template\/\">download the template here.<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you\u2019re interested in contract or supply work in retirement with your employer, discuss opportunities and the process with your supervisor. Check with your pension provider to learn if your post-retirement employment plans will have any impact on your pension.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check the expiry date on your passport and provincial health plan card.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Let your colleagues know you&rsquo;re retiring. Be prepared to share with any groups and committees you&rsquo;re part of.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"7-3-months-before-retirement\">3 months before retirement<\/h3>\n\n<p>It\u2019s time to take care of details that will give you peace of mind for your future.<\/p>\n\n<p>Tasks:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Review your life insurance. Consider whether you have enough life insurance to meet your family\u2019s needs should something happen to you. See our post <a href=\"http:\/\/rtoero.ca\/how-to-make-tax-time-more-manageable-in-retirement\/\">How to make tax time more manageable in retirement for considerations and tips.<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consider if you want to attend the <a href=\"https:\/\/rtoero.ca\/events\/\">Retirement Planning Workshop<\/a> again. This month\u2019s big task is to take care of your insurance.<\/p>\n\n<p>Tasks:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Apply for retirement health insurance. We always recommend applying one to three months before your retirement date. You have until 60 days after your current group insurance plan ends to sign up with automatic approval. Usually, that\u2019s 60 days after your retirement date. When you sign up now, your coverage will kick in the day following the termination of your current plan, so you&rsquo;ll have seamless coverage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Complete the RTOERO <a href=\"https:\/\/ententefoundation.ca\/insurance\/\">insurance form.<\/a> Here\u2019s what you\u2019ll need:<\/p>\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your <a href=\"\/welcome-to-the-membership-portal\/\">RTOERO membership.<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your health card number and the health card number of your spouse and any dependents, if applicable<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Current insurance information<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A cheque for reference for bank deductions or if you\u2019re an Ontario Teachers\u2019 Pension Plan (OTPP) member, you have the option to deduct premiums from your pension<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Review your will. Retirement is a natural point to revisit your will and ensure you\u2019ve identified a power of attorney for personal care and property. Read<a href=\"https:\/\/ententefoundation.ca\/six-qualities-of-a-solid-estate-plan\/\"> six qualities of a solid estate plan<\/a> for advice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"9-1-month-before-retirement\">1 month before retirement<\/h3>\n\n<p>There are only a few tasks left. You\u2019ve done so much by tackling the tasks in monthly blocks.<\/p>\n\n<p>Tasks:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Write your retirement speech. Here are some <a href=\"https:\/\/ententefoundation.ca\/5-tips-for-giving-an-amazing-retirement-speech\/\">tips to help you!<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Update the email subscriptions you want to keep, so they go to a personal email address.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you\u2019ve decided to start <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/services\/benefits\/publicpensions\/cpp.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CPP<\/a>\/<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rrq.gouv.qc.ca\/en\/retraite\/rrq\/Pages\/calcul_rente.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">QPP<\/a>, apply for it. If you\u2019re 65, you can also apply to begin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/services\/benefits\/publicpensions\/cpp\/old-age-security\/apply.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Old Age Security (OAS).<\/a> OAS is a government-provided pension, intended to supplement income after age 65. There\u2019s an option to defer CPP\/QPP and OAS if you wish.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contact your car insurance provider. You may be eligible for a reduction in your auto insurance costs since you won\u2019t be commuting to work anymore.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"10-retirement-month\">Retirement month<\/h3>\n\n<p>It\u2019s here. The last month of work. You deserve all the accolades you receive! Congratulations.<\/p>\n\n<p>Tasks:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Now that everything is in order, you can enjoy your last month of work!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remind yourself that however you feel about retirement, you\u2019re not alone. <a href=\"https:\/\/ententefoundation.ca\/how-to-prepare-for-retirement-emotionally\/\">It\u2019s natural to have mixed emotions<\/a>. It\u2019s also natural to be excited or even nervous. There\u2019s no one right way to feel at this time!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"11-after-retirement\">After retirement<\/h3>\n\n<p>Tasks:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Purge your closet! You might find your wardrobe needs change when you\u2019re not going to work every day. If you have professional clothing, it could be beneficial to someone else. Look for somewhere to donate clothing you don\u2019t need anymore.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Connect with your local <a href=\"https:\/\/rtoero.ca\/about\/rtoero-districts\/\">RTOERO district<\/a> and other retiree groups<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"12-retiring-and-still-need-health-insurance-for-retirement-\"><strong>Retiring and still need health insurance for retirement?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>There&rsquo;s still time!
